Beautiful Lagan Valley is a showpiece setting for this delightful city. If you are looking to delve into Ireland’s rich cultural history, Lisburn is an excellent place to start. Historic sites such as the Giant’s Ring are a testimony to the industry of the people of Lisburn even as far back as five thousand years ago, and comparatively “modern” attractions such as the city’s exquisite Georgian architecture and the birthplace of Irish inventor Harry Ferguson are also sure to enchant. Of particular interest to the historically-inclined is the Duneight Motte and Bailey, a magnificent example of an old Norman fortification.
For those more inclined to the arts industry, the Irish Linen Centre and Museum may prove an interesting stop. So too may the new Island Arts Centre, a purpose-built facility which offers visitors the chance to create as well as take in a performance.
The more active and/or entertainment-oriented tourist need not fear, either. Not only does Lisburn offer the traditional amusements such as an omniplex cinema and park trails on which to hike, it is also home to the Lagan Valley LeisurePlex, which boasts the largest leisure pool in Northern Ireland. The LeisurePlex makes for a great choice of venue particularly if your regular plans get rained out; open seven days a week (closed only on Christmas and New Year) it offers visitors such widely varied and exciting aquatic amusements as flumes, spa pools, competition pools and even a sunken “pirate galleon” for the kids!
