Snorkeling On The Big Island
Publish Date : 11/30/2007 8:47:00 PM   Source : Travel and Hotels News Onlypunjab.com
My favorite Activity in Hawaii is snorkeling, it is inexpensive, easy, and can be done almost anywhere in Hawaii. Each time I travel to any island I try and snorkel as much as I can, and so far, my favorite beach to snorkel on is at the Waikoloa Beach Marriot on the Big Island of Hawaii. The beach at the Marriot is a public beach, so even if you are not a guest, you can still enjoy one of the few beaches on the Big Island.

Snorkeling is one of the most inexpensive activities that a traveler can enjoy on any of the Hawaiian islands. Typically you can rent snorkel equipment consisting of snorkel, mask, and fins for about $20.00 for half a day. For travelers who may need prescription eye-wear, most water activity huts come prepared with prescription goggles. Activity huts can be found on most beaches in Hawaii, and rent out equipment for all types of water activities.

There is no age limit for snorkeling; it's an easy activity for anyone who can swim; and it's a great family activity.

As with any activity though, there are a few rules and safety precautions to follow:

  1. Always wear sunscreen, only part of your body is underwater.
  2. Try not to swim alone.
  3. Do not go too far out, don't forget, you have to swim back in as well.
  4. Do not stand on coral, it will kill the coral.
  5. Don't touch the animals, it is against Hawaii State Law, and there is a fine.

There are many places to snorkel in Hawaii; all you need is snorkel gear and a beach. But it is hard to find a really great place to snorkel; I recommend the beach at the Marriot because you can see coral, schools of colorful fish, turtles, and even manta rays.

Turtles eat near the corral so they are easy to spot whenever there are large areas of coral. Manta rays are a rare find for people snorkeling, but can be found around sandy bottom areas. In particular at the Marriot, there a couple of buoys in the water, and if you search around that area you are likely to run across a manta ray or two.

Happy Snorkeling!
