CVN Kalari

CVN Kalari, a center of martial arts training is situated at Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, South India.

The center focuses in the over all growth and welfare of the disciple through the spiritual and ritual practices of training process. Kalaripayattu is the major martial art trained in this center. The kalaripayattu means martial training inside an arena or it is otherwise called military training ground.

The training for kalaripayattu begins at the very age of eight. The individual is supposed to undergo all the ritual practices concerned with Kalaripayattu.

The center was established in 1956 by the joined efforts of CVN Balan Nair and Kottackal Karunakaran Gurukkal. The center was popularized by different stage demos, collecting information and establishing it all over the state. CVN Kalari is built as per the tradition. It is built in the east -west direction and is fully closed except the small door in the eastern side. Traditional wick lamp or the Nilavilakku is used to provide light within the Kalari. As per the tradition, Kalaripayattu is performed in front of certain deities like Ganapathy, Bhadrakali, Naga etc in order receive blessings from it.

The disciple has to undergo systematic training process to become a perfect Kalari master. Special treatments are given in case any sprains, fractures or injuries occur during this practice. CVN kalari performs this martial art from in and abroad the country. Special demonstrations are given to interested people on request. The timings at CVN Kalari is between 6 am and 9am and between 5pm and 7pm. A book named Kalaripayattu is published by the CVN kalari Sangham in two languages- English and Malayalam written by P. Balakrishnan.
